How Ideal Weight is Calculated?

Ideal weight is calculated using multiple established medical formulas that have been developed over decades of research. Each formula uses height and gender as primary factors, as these are the most reliable predictors of healthy weight ranges.

Four Medical Formulas Used:

1. Robinson Formula (1983)

Most commonly used in clinical settings, provides balanced estimates for both men and women.

2. Miller Formula (1983)

Similar to Robinson, developed around the same time with slight variations in coefficients.

3. Devine Formula (1974)

Originally developed for medication dosing, widely used in medical practice.

4. Hamwi Formula (1964)

One of the earliest formulas, still referenced in medical literature.

Example:

Let's calculate ideal weight for a 30-year-old man who is 175 cm (5 feet 9 inches) tall.

Given: Height = 175 cm (69 inches), Gender = Male

Step 1: Calculate using Robinson Formula (1983)

Ideal Weight = 52 + 1.9 × (69 - 60) = 52 + 17.1 = 69.1 kg

Step 2: Calculate using Miller Formula (1983)

Ideal Weight = 56.2 + 1.41 × (69 - 60) = 56.2 + 12.69 = 68.89 kg

Step 3: Calculate using Devine Formula (1974)

Ideal Weight = 50 + 2.3 × (69 - 60) = 50 + 20.7 = 70.7 kg

Step 4: Calculate using Hamwi Formula (1964)

Ideal Weight = 48 + 2.7 × (69 - 60) = 48 + 24.3 = 72.3 kg

Step 5: Calculate Average

Average = (69.1 + 68.89 + 70.7 + 72.3) / 4 = 70.25 kg

Step 6: Calculate Range (±10%)

Range = 70.25 × 0.9 to 70.25 × 1.1

Range = 63.2 kg to 77.3 kg

Result: The ideal weight range for this person is approximately 63.2 kg to 77.3 kg, with an average of 70.3 kg.

Our calculator averages all four formulas and provides a ±10% range to account for individual variations in body composition, muscle mass, and frame size. This gives you a comprehensive and realistic ideal weight range.

Ideal Weight Calculator FAQs

What is ideal weight and how is it different from BMI?

Ideal weight is a target weight range based on your height and gender using medical formulas. BMI (Body Mass Index) is a ratio of weight to height squared. Ideal weight provides a specific weight target, while BMI categorizes you into weight ranges. Both are useful for health assessment.

Why are there different ideal weight formulas?

Different formulas were developed at different times and for different purposes (medication dosing, clinical assessment, etc.). Each has slight variations, so averaging multiple formulas provides a more comprehensive and reliable estimate than using a single formula.

Is ideal weight the same for everyone of the same height?

No, ideal weight varies by gender and individual factors like body frame size, muscle mass, and bone density. That's why we provide a ±10% range to account for these variations. Men typically have higher ideal weights than women of the same height.

What if I'm a bodybuilder or athlete?

Ideal weight formulas are designed for the general population. Athletes and bodybuilders with high muscle mass may weigh more than the "ideal" range but still be healthy. Body fat percentage and body composition are better indicators for athletes than weight alone.

Should I aim for the exact average ideal weight?

The ±10% range is provided because individual ideal weight can vary based on body composition, frame size, and muscle mass. Being within the range is more important than hitting the exact average. Focus on overall health and body composition rather than a specific number.
