How GST (Goods and Services Tax) is Calculated?

GST is a unified indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services in India. It replaced multiple taxes like VAT, service tax, excise duty, etc. GST calculation depends on whether the price is inclusive or exclusive of GST. The new GST 2.0 structure (effective post-September 2025) simplifies the tax system with four main slabs: 0%, 5%, 18%, and 40%.

GST Formula/Equation

GST Exclusive: GST = Price × (GST Rate / 100)

GST Inclusive: GST = (Price × GST Rate) / (100 + GST Rate)

Final Price = Base Price + GST Amount

Where:

  • Price = Base price (before GST)
  • GST Rate = Applicable GST percentage (0%, 5%, 18%, 40% (GST 2.0))
  • GST Amount = Calculated GST value

Example:

Let's calculate GST for a product with base price of ₹10,000 at 18% GST rate (GST exclusive).

Given: Base Price = ₹10,000, GST Rate = 18%

Step 1: Calculate GST Amount

GST = Price × (GST Rate / 100)

GST = ₹10,000 × (18 / 100)

GST = ₹10,000 × 0.18

GST = ₹1,800

Step 2: Calculate Final Price

Final Price = Base Price + GST

Final Price = ₹10,000 + ₹1,800

Final Price = ₹11,800

For GST Inclusive Price:

If final price is ₹11,800 (GST inclusive), then:

GST = (₹11,800 × 18) / (100 + 18)

GST = ₹2,12,400 / 118 = ₹1,800

Base Price = ₹11,800 - ₹1,800 = ₹10,000

Result: For a ₹10,000 product with 18% GST, you pay ₹1,800 as GST, making the total ₹11,800.

GST Calculator FAQs

What is GST?

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a unified indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services in India. It replaced multiple taxes like VAT, service tax, excise duty, etc. The new GST 2.0 structure (post-September 2025) has four main slabs: 0% (essentials), 5% (daily needs), 18% (standard), and 40% (sin/luxury). The old GST structure had rates of 0%, 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%.

How is GST calculated?

GST is calculated on the base price. For inclusive calculation: GST Amount = (Price × GST Rate) / (100 + GST Rate). For exclusive calculation: GST Amount = Price × (GST Rate / 100). Final Price = Base Price + GST Amount.

What is the difference between GST inclusive and exclusive?

GST inclusive means the price already includes GST (you need to extract GST from the total). GST exclusive means GST is added to the base price (you calculate GST on top of the base price). Most retail prices are GST inclusive.

What are the different GST rates in India?

GST 2.0 Rates (Post-September 2025): 0% (essentials like fresh produce, milk, bread), 5% (daily needs like packaged food, medicines, soaps), 18% (standard rate for electronics, small cars, cement), and 40% (sin/luxury items like luxury cars, tobacco, online gaming). Old GST Rates: 0% (essential items), 5% (restaurant services, transport), 12% (processed foods, medicines), 18% (most goods and services), and 28% (luxury items, sin goods). Some items also have special rates or are exempt.

Is this GST calculator accurate?
